About Dev Diwali or Dev Dipavali


Dev Diwali festival is observe Hindu people on Gujarati month Kartik Purnima day every year.Dev Deepavali, celebrated on the fifteenth day of Diwali festival.According to English Gregorian calendar this festival is celebrated mostly November month. It is believed that on the day of Dev Deepavali, the Gods descend on Earth. It is interesting to note that the Kartik Purnima festival also coincides with the Jain light festival and Guru Nanak Jayanti. Dev Diwali is believed that Lord Vishnu returned to Vaikunta, his abode on this day after the Vamana incarnation and visiting King Bali. Another legend has it that Lord Shiva killed the three demons, who were killing the Devas and humans, and destroyed the three cities built by them on this day. The day is also known as Kartik poonam or Karthik Purnimaand Tripurari Poornima.



On this day the number of pilgrims begins to increase manifolds and most of the pilgrims camp by the riverside. In the evening, pilgrims and local people decorate the entire riverbank with tiny earthen lamps ('Diya'). These lamps are lit as a mark of welcome to the Gods as they descend on earth. The little sparks of fire flicker elegantly and is a wonderful sight to watch. The 'Ganga-Aarti' is an important event in the evening. Almost all Ghats organize their own ceremony. Huge lamps are set ablaze and the priest holds forth the lamp as the multitude chants the hymns.Dev Diwali marks the end of the fortnight of Diwali celebrations and a major event on the day is the lighting of Diyas (lamps) during night after the moon is sighted.


History and Legend of Dev Diwali

Dev Diwali is celebrated every year in the Varanasi on the 15th day of Diwali in respect of Ganga by the pilgrims. It is held in the month of Kartik at Kartik Purnima when the moon become in its full view. It is celebrated and observed by the people with the great trumpet blast and overwhelms. In Hindu religion, Dev Diwali is celebrated in the belief that Gods descend on the Earth at this grand occasion. There is another myth of celebrating Dev Diwali that, at this day, demon Tripurasur was killed by the Gods, so it is named as Dev Diwali and celebrated as a victory day of the Gods at the Kartik Purnima.

A large number of Hindu devotees start assembling from the day of the Prabodhini Ekadasi (the eleventh day of the fortnight) itself. The official celebration is usually held on the Dasaswamedh Ghat. Dev Diwali is a festival that should be captured in cameras to cherish memories of your celebration on the vivid Ghats of River Ganges.Every ghat and temple in the Holy City is alight with earthen ghee diyas. 



On this occasion, each and every ghat of River Ganges are packed with the huge crowd of pilgrims and decorated with varieties of diyas making viewers’ visit most memorable. People flow thousands of Diyas (earthen lamps) in the holy water of Ganges dedicating to their Gods according to the ritual beliefs and culture.
