Onam Festival History

Onam is the state festival of Kerala. Celebrated in the first month ‘chingam’ according to the Malayalee Calender, it is also the annual harvest festival of the state. The festival falls in the month of August to September according to the Gregorian calendar. The celebrations of Onam go ten days long up to Tiruvonam and in some cases to twelve days long until chatayam (twelfth day). The celebrations of Onam include elaborate rituals, music, dances, sports, boat races and of course scrumptious foods. There are several legends and stories attached with the festival. Read on to explore more about the festival of Onam i.e. its history, its origin and its significance.

Onam has been a part of Malayalee culture for centuries. The earliest record of the festival that has been found belongs to the reign of Kulasekhara Perumals around i.e. around 800 AD. However, there are great possibilities that the festival was celebrated before this period also. Any ways, due to lack of physical evidences, it has been assumed that the festival started somewhere around 800 A.D. as the harvest festival of the state. However, there are so many legends and stories attached with the day that it seems that the festival has been a part of the region ever since its origin.

Onam Celebrations has two most important significances in context of the Malayalee culture. First of all, it is celebrated as the harvest festival of the state. It reminds one of the golden age of prosperity when the entire month of Chingam (the month of Malayalee calendar that corresponds to the August- September time of Gregorian calendar) was celebrated as the Onam month. It was the time when the farms of the state produced excess of food grains and brought prosperity and riches to the state. Arriving after the rain-drenched month of Karkidakam (July-August), Chingam was welcomed with much enthusiasm by the people of Kerala.

The second and the most popularly quoted legend with the festival is related to the demon king, Mahabali. It is said that Mahabali was a generous and kind hearted king of Kerala. He was powered by a boon granted to him by Lord Brahma, he was invincible and thus gradually won over the entire earth. Soon after he won the earth, he also won the territory of heaven and became its king. He gradually rose up to become the undisputed ruler of all the three worlds. It was the time he inflicted violence upon the gods. Lord Vishnu then decided to overthrow Bali from his powers. He went to Bali in the form of a Brahman as he knew that the king rejoiced in doing good deeds and giving alms to the poor. He asked for three feet of land from the Demon king to which the king readily agreed.

Gradually, he Brahaman increased in size. In one step, he measured the entire earth and in the other he covered the entire heaven, he then asked Bali that where should he put the third step. Bali, a man of his words, then laid down his head and asked Brahman to step his foot on his head. Vishnu disguised in the form of Brahman, thus appeared in front of Bali and offered him the Kingdom of the nether world. However as Bali was very much in love with the people of his kingdom at earth, he asked Vishnu to give him a boon so that he can visit the earth once a year to which Vishu readily agreed. Bali, since then is believed to come to earth in the month of ‘chingam’ according to the Malayalee calendar and the entire festival is celebrated to welcome their dear king Mahabali to earth.

Onam Festival Rangoli

Rangoli or Kolam is one of the most popular arts in India. It is actually a kind of decorative motif made by using finely ground white powder, colors and flowers. A Rangoli can be either a wall art as well as floor art. The patterns in a traditional Rangoli are usually derived from nature. The most popular Rangoli motifs are peacocks, swans, mango, flowers, creepers, etc. Traditionally the dyes for the Rangoli are derived from natural like barks of trees, leaves, indigo, rice flour, vermilion and turmeric powder etc. However, these days the use of synthetic dyes has become extremely popular. It is considered auspicious to make a Rangoli or Kolam on the festive occasions. In Kerala, Pookalam, the flower Rangoli is thus made on the occasion of Onam.

About Onam

The most famous festival of Kerala and celebrated throughout the country, Onam is an important harvest festival, a time of feasting and enjoyment. Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). This corresponds with the month of August-September according to Gregorian Calendar. As both a national festival and the state festival of Kerala, Onam is celebrated on a grand scale, eagerly looked forward to by Malayalis. It’s not just Malayalis who celebrate this occasion however; people of all religions and creeds enjoy being a part of the festivities, making it one of the truly secular festivals in India.

Carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, Atham and tenth day, Thiruonam are most important of all. Popularity and presentation of rich culture of the state during the carnival made Onam the National Festival of Kerala in 1961. Elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers all are a part of the dynamic festival called Onam.

Government of India has taken due notice of this vibrant and colorful festival. It promotes Onam internationally in a big way and celebrates 'Tourist Week' for Kerala during Onam celebrations. Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists visit Kerala to be a part of Onam.

Onam Celebration

Onam is celebrated in the southern state of Kerala in India. It is considered to be the biggest cultural festival of the state. The cities where major celebrations take place include Kottayam, Trivandrum, Kochi and Thrissur etc. The entire festival is celebrated as tourism week by the Kerala state government. The rich hues of Malayalam culture are beautifully showcased during the festival season.

Singing traditional boat songs, the oarsmen splash their oars into the water to the rhythm of the songs. They guide their boats to cruise along, seemingly like a fish on the move. The golden lace at the head of the boat, the flag and the ornamental umbrella at the centre make it a spectacular show of pageantry. Though ostensibly a competitive event, the festival is more a visual extravaganza.

To date on the eve of Thiru Onam the boat Palliodam floats down from Katoormana to the accompaniment of blowing of conch shells, music and drum beating. Torches are lit and snake boats accompany the procession. The colourful boat festival is held on Uthruttathi or the fifth day after Thiru Onam.

Each snake boat belongs to a village along the banks of the river Pamba and is worshipped like a deity. Only men are allowed to board or even touch a boat and that just barefoot. Every year the boat is oiled mainly with fish oil, coconut shell, and carbon, mixed with eggs. The black mixture keeps the wood strong and the boat slippery in the water. Annual repairs are carried out lovingly by the village carpenter and people take pride in their boat, which represents their village and is named after it.

Tradition demands that the Nambudiri Brahmin be at the main rudder oar about 12 feet long. There are four main oarsmen who control the movement of the boat. And in minutes the boat can turn around just by the twist of the hand by the chief oarsman. In the old days the villagers used to sit in the boat in order of their castes but today the order is changing though a certain pattern can still be distinguished.

Everyone- the carpenter, the barber, the goldsmith, the blacksmith as well as the agricultural labourers - all have a place on the boat. And in close harmony and magnificent synchronization they pull at the oars. In Trichur, a vibrant procession with resplendently caparisoned elephants is taken out.

 Onam Rituals

Onam is the rice harvest festival of Kerala. It is also known as the festival of Rain flowers.
All the ten days of celebration of Onam has its own significance.

The characteristic floral designs known as ‘pookkalam’ are symbolic of this festival. Usually the women of the house make different types of patterns on the ground with flowers and lit lamps to invite King Mahabali to their house.

People gift and wear new clothes; this is known as onakkodi.

Onam is of special importance as it unites people of all religions residing in the state. It spreads the message of unity and peace in society.

Onam Legend

Story goes that during the reign of mighty asura (demon) king, Mahabali, Kerala witnessed its golden era. Every body in the state was happy and prosperous and king was highly regarded by his subjects. Apart from all his virtues, Mahabali had one shortcoming. He was egoistic. This weakness in Mahabali's character was utilized by Gods to bring an end to his reign as they felt challenged by Mahabali's growing popularity. However, for all the good deed done by Mahabali, God granted him a boon that he could annually visit his people with whom he was so attached.

It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People make all efforts to celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

About Kevda Trij Vrat

Kevda Teej Vrat is an important festival performed by Hindu women. The ritual is dedicated to the Goddess Parvati and is observed in many states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra ,etc. In some places, the teej fast is a three day affair but nowadays most of the women only observe the Vrat on a single day that is on teej.

Kevda Trij Vratkatha

Married and unmarried women observe a fast on the day and offer Kevada flower to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

Married women observe the Kevda Trij Vrata for a prosperous and happy married life and for the wellbeing of their husbands. Unmarried women observe it for getting a good husband. Flowers of Kevda (Agave) are offered to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the day.

Women also offer special prayers in Lord Shiva Temples. Some people opt for a complete fast others observe a partial fast on the day.Kevada plant is popularly known as fragrant screw pine.

Kevda Trij Vrat Puja

On the Kevda Trij, women wear Red or Green coloured clothes and bangles which signify luck. They dress up very beautifully. They wear lots of ornaments and offer pooja. Fresh fruits, flowers and green vegetables are offered to Godess Parvati and similarly along with fruits, vegetables, flowers,a special flower of Kevda is offered to Lord Shiva. Rice patolis, sweets and various dishes are prepared on this day. Dishes made out of coconut are a specialty.

Kevda Trij Vrat Fast

According to Hindu belief, Shiva took no notice of the love of Parvati for very long time as he was haunted by the death of Sati. To get the attention of Lord Shiva,Godess Parvati performed several harshness on the Himalayas for several years. Some Puranas indicate that Goddess Parvati did repentance for 16 years and survived on grass and fruits. Finally, at the end by getting impressed by Godess Parvati Shiva acknowledged Godess Parvati’s devotion and love and agreed to marry her.

Women observe Hartalika Teej Vrat in remembrance of Parvati’s deep termination to win over her love. It is believed that Goddess Parvati will be blessful with those women who observe the Vrat or the fast. There are several regional variations in the Hartalika Teej Vrat mythology. But the summation is the same.

Even today, many married women and young girls observe ‘nirjala vrata’ (severe fasting even without water). A grand banguet is held after the fast in all houses.

Meaning of different postures of Lord Ganesha

The most popular deity of Hindus is Lord Ganesha, every Hindu have Ganesha statues, painting, sceneries and handicrafts. Ganesha idols are very commonly used as decorative purpose but do you know we can also use them as a fengshui item.

Want to know how,the meaning of different postures of Lord Ganesha and effects of placing statue on different locations, please read this blog and welcome prosperity to your home.

Some of the most common postures of Lord Ganesha are:

Dancing Posture

Popularly known as the NrityaGanesha, it represents Ganpathi in various dance postures. In most of the idols it has been noted that his left leg is raised while the right one rests on the ground. It is believed that Lord Ganesha used to entertain his parents by dancing. His movements show grace and poise. The dancing Ganesha symbolizes NatrajaGanesha which is often related to the dance of destruction. Some of the representations show LordGanesha on hisVahana, the mouse. This depicts the sheer power and courageous nature of the small mouse and how after seeking blessings from Ganpati, size does not matter.

Standing Posture

The standing posture is a representation of rigidity and the correct attitude. This posture is known as Abhanga which means no bent body. It has also been noted that sometimes while Lord Ganesha is standing, his one leg rests firmly on the ground while the other is on his vahana (vehicle), the mouse. In this form Lord Ganesha looks huge because of his enormous belly.

Sitting Posture

Usually when we see a seated idol of Lord Ganesha, he is sitting on a throne or on a lotus flower. The most common sitting posture is known as the Lalitasana. It shows Ganpathi sitting on a throne with his left leg folded and the right leg resting on the ground or vice versa. In some of the idols the Lord is seen sitting cross legged on a lotus flower and that particular posture denotes that he is meditating. The leg that rests on the ground shows that Lord Ganesha is concerned about the affairs of the world and is there to help devotee and bestow his blessings on the world. The other leg however denotes his semi meditation pose.

Reclining Ganesha

In many idols and painting Lord Ganesha is shown in a reclining posture. It symbolizes luxury, comfort, wealth and prosperity. When Lord Ganesha is shown in this form it gives a very royal and divine look. He is inclined on a throne usually with a pillow to support one of his arms for the extra comfort. This form is seen more in art forms like paintings, sculptures and artifacts than in idols that are worshiped.

Ganesha`s trunk

The curved trunk also symbolizes the primordial cosmic sound of OM.The well grown trunk of His form represents a well develop intellect and wisdom.
Statues of Ganesha are kept at home to attract prosperity and ward off bad influences.
Whenever anyone buys a statue of Ganesha, they are asked to buy a Ganesha with its trunk facing left and avoid the right. It is said there are reasons for this.

Importance of the direction of the curve of trunk.

When the trunk curves right, it is called Dakshinabhimukhi in Hindi. The sun`s energies flow through the trunk. This form of Ganesha is called Siddhi Vinayaka, as it can immediately yield desired results. It needs special worship and one has to be very careful in keeping such idols at home. If prayers are not done as per Vedic rules, then it incurs the anger of the residing Lord and as the heat principle is governed by the Lord Sun, it burns away good results. Rules should never be violated and poojas should be done at the right time, in the right suitable way, which is very difficult for householders to adhere to.

➤The dakshinabhimukhi idol or idol of Ganesha with trunk curved right is not usually worshipped at home as there is an emission of frequency waves coming from the south called Tiryak or raja frequency. When all Vedic norms are followed meticulously and worshipped accordingly, then it increases the sattwa or highly positive vibrations that can withstand the raja frequencies emitted from the south direction.

➤When idols with trunk curved right are worshipped, it bestows boons of moksha or salvation. It liberates the soul from worldly fetters.

➤If the trunk faces straight, then it signifies that the sushumna is open and such idols cannot be seen easily.

➤If the trunk is swung high up in the air, it means that the kundalini current has merged with the sahasrara permanently.

If the idol of Ganesha is placed at the main entrance of one`s house it deflects all the negative energies that enter the house.

It is believed that keeping Ganesha statues at home and office brings in good luck.

Ganesha’s Mount
The Rat
In India the rat, represents trick, cleverness, sagacity and political slyness. Therefore, as normally, the rat has been first conquered, then mastered and occupied by the One who is the incarnation of spiritual strength. After all, the rat had to bow to Ganesh, his Master, more efficient to guide him than his own insight.
The rat symbolizes desire. This animal has a very small mouth and minute sharp teeth, but he is the most ravenous of all the animals. His greediness and eagerness are so strong that he robs more than he can eat and that he collects more than he may remember, so that he often leaves inadvertently burrows full of stock grains.

Other Ganesh mounts

If the rat is the usual vehicle of the god, so that Ganesh without His mouse looks missing “something”, exceptions are described: first the peacock, a rare Ganesh vehicle, under the form of Mayureshwar and Vikata.

Very exceptionally, the Ganesh mount may be the elephant, as mentioned in the SkandaPurâna.
In forms like HerambaGanapati, SimhaGanapati, PañchamukhaVinâyaka, Vakratunda, the Ganesh mount is the lion or, moreover, in the case of MooladharaGanapati, a multiple-headed serpent on which He is sitting.

The serpent

Since a very long time, the serpent has been often associated with Ganesh. Tantric texts describe Ganesh holding a serpent. A lot of Ganesh images display a snake coiled around His stomac, or His neck, or like a sacred thread on His left shoulder, whilst He is holding a snake in two of His hands on several Nepalese statues.
